The concert will include passages exploring the life of St Nicholas from Bishop of Myra to Santa Claus read by Matthew Lazin-Ryder of CBC's "On the Coast" and the choir will present music sung in Armenian, Latin - both classical and medieval, Spanish, German and Dutch. Some popular carols will appear in new arrangements by Artistic Director, David Millard, and we will give a performance of his newly written "mini cantata" Knecht Ruprecht

East and West - Choral music of Palestrina, Bach and Tchaikovsky

The Vivaldi Chamber Choir presents "East and West" - a unique program of the most beautiful and best-loved choral works from Palestrina, Bach and Tchaikovsky, representing two divergent European religious and musical traditions.

Featuring the sublime polyphony of Palestrina's Sicut Cervus and Bach's Jesu, Meine Freude as well as the graceful harmony of Tchaikovsky's Nine Sacred Choruses, Vivaldi Chamber Choir will perform in the original languages, with soloists including Michelle Herrewynen and Steve Froese.

In 1054 the Roman Church formally divided into two main branches: the western Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox. Each developed its own forms of liturgy and its own style of music. The western style is strongly associated with the polyphony of Palestrina and his successors. The greatest of these, working within the reformed Lutheran tradition was, of course, J. S. Bach. The Eastern Church created its own distinctive style of harmonized chant, most notably in the Russian Orthodox Church.

In Search of St. Nicholas

In the dark, a robed figure reaches up and drops a parcel through a window. The three purses of money in it give the three sisters in the house each a dowry and save them from a life of poverty - or worse. Thus runs the best-known story of Nicholas, the fourth century bishop of Myra who is thereby established as a protector of children and giver of gifts. Whether he is called Father Christmas, Sinterklaas, or Santa, the Byzantine bishop still plies his trade today.

Join the choir for music and readings in celebration of the original St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, whose deeds paved the way for the many legendary Christmas gift-givers who have followed in his footsteps as well as some special arrangements by David Millard of popular Christmas favourites. The choir will be presenting a capella and accompanied pieces by:

  • Gallus
  • Guerrero
  • Zielenski
  • Weelkes
  • Peter Warlock
  • William Matthias
We welcome Matthew Lazin-Ryder of CBC's "On The Coast" as our Reader and Elisabeth Jahren as our guest accompanist.

Sunday, December 4th, 3:30 p.m. St. Mary Magdalene Church
