Hark, the Herald Angels…Voyces of Christèmas
The theme this year is about angels. How did angelic beings feature in the traditional Christmas story? What is their history? Come with us as music and readings explore the roles of angels as messengers and intermediaries between heaven and earth. And so as not to disappoint, we’ll be sure to round out the program with some favourite arrangements of traditional Christmas songs by our artistic director, David Millard.
We are delighted to have as our guests six angelic treble voices from the St. Andrew's-Wesley Boys' Vocal Ensemble as well as accompaniment by recorders, keyboard and guitar.
After the concert, join us for cookies, hot cider, and a chat.

The King Shall Rejoyce - The Restoration of Music & the Monarchy
With the Restoration in 1660, English music experienced a watershed. Charles’ exile in France gave him a taste for the French style, and consequently the court composers like Blow and Purcell introduced stringed instruments in choral anthems and odes. A featured work is Purcell’s Cecilian Ode Welcome to All the Pleasures.

Shakespeare’s Songbook
Music was an integral element of the Elizabethan stage. Music framed the dramas, accompanied dance scenes, and, of course, was sung. Not only did Shakespeare write his own song lyrics (often intended to be sung to well known tunes) but he imported popular songs into his plays as well. Since Shakespeare's day many composers have been attracted to his lyrics and set them. In addition, they have set his sonnets and non-lyrical portions of his plays. This programmme explores a variety of treatments of the Bard's oeuvre, running the gamut from period settings to recent compositions.
