Vivaldi Chamber Choir – Rehearsal Etiquette

Our Mission: To foster a sense of community, inclusion, and personal achievement through choral excellence, outreach, and a diverse repertoire in a safe and nurturing environment.

Choral singing is love! It’s love for:

  • Each other
  • The music
  • The audience

This means we also show love and respect for:

  • The Artistic Director
  • Our Artistic Team (which includes our section leads and our collaborative pianist)
  • The process by which we hone our craft – our rehearsals

Specifically:

  • We maintain a SCENT FREE rehearsal space to respect singers with allergies.
  • We sing masked if we have been under the weather or exposed to any illness.
  • We participate over Zoom if we are truly unwell – and check with our section leads to ensure that we have not missed anything.
  • If we cannot attend a rehearsal, we let our section lead know in advance (and let them know if we will be attending over Zoom, or if we will be reviewing the recording on our own time).
  • We prepare our music in advance to the best of our ability. We expect nothing less from others and ourselves.
  • We arrive a little early, allowing time to greet each other, get organized, and start right on time. We are a community! We should socialize a LOT before and after rehearsals.
  • If we are unavoidably late, we approach the chorus quietly, and wait respectfully at the side until acknowledged and invited by the Director.
  • We silence our phones during rehearsals and use them only to display music if needed.
  • We don’t talk during rehearsals except as invited by the Director. It’s easy to start quiet little conversations – often helpful ones – when not singing, but this distracts everyone and interferes with the group’s learning. Instructions and coaching come only from the Director and artistic team, unless structured otherwise.
  • We may have excellent suggestions! We make these to our section leads or to the Director at the break, after the rehearsal or by email – but never by interrupting during the rehearsal.
  • We pay close attention at all times to the Director, the process, the music.
  • We do our best to contribute to the rehearsal at all times. We listen to instructions for our own part and others. While other parts are rehearsed, we listen, learn, audiate our own part, and be ready to contribute when asked.
  • We watch the Director closely at all times for singing cues!
